DeLand Florida |

DeLand was incorporated in 1882 and named in honor of its generous benefactor, Henry A. DeLand who donated money to individuals that wanted to construct and start churches and schools. One successful undertaking was the DeLand Academy with John B. Stetson, which is now Stetson University. Bordered on the west by the legendary St. Johns River, DeLand has been an important part of Florida's history, especially during the steamboat era. Today, DeLand continues to preserve its cultural and educational heritage. The downtown area is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and features a nationally award winning Main Street. The history of DeLand is told through a series of murals that takes the viewer through an unfolding story of the community. Main Street DeLand offers an eclectic mix of antique shops, boutiques, sidewalk cafes and variety shops captured in a quaint small town atmosphere. Award winning art festivals, community events and international workshops provide year-round activities for locals and visitors.
